An alcoholic will often respond with hostility and denial if you suggest he is addicted to alcohol. People are incurably addicted to the idea that they can earn salvation by good works and moral character, and they react with animosity to the doctrine of pure grace. Many sincere Christians believe they can grow in obedience to God by some system of keeping the law.
